Virtual Wah is a single player game based on the game Wah. Wah is a game of concentration and rhythm, played amongst groups of friends. In Wah, players stand in a circle until eliminated, when they instead sit down in that same circle. To start the game, a player sends the “wah” to another player in the circle by pointing at them after moving their arms from being clapsed above their head to an outward position. The recipient then must take their arms in the same form, and receive the “wah” by moving their arms from an outward position to above their head, as the first player had started. Afterwards, the two players on either side of the recipient must make a chopping motion towards that player in unison. Then, the pattern repeats with the recipient then becoming the sender. Also a note, during every action, a player must say “wah,” and failure to complete the correct action, to complete the action on time, or to say “wah” results in elimination. As players are eliminated, the circle does not move, but instead, new neighbors are formed. When a player is eliminated, the player to their right then becomes their left neighbor’s new right neighbor, and vice versa.
Virtual Wah takes this exciting game into the two-dimensional world of the iPhone and iPod Touch, piggy-backing on many of the rules with some adaptations. In this virtual version, your opponents will never make a mistake, so you just need to worry about performing the correct actions yourself. One benefit of this is that you don’t have to track who your neighbor is; it never changes.
Virtual Wah is played using swipes on the screen to indicate actions: swipe towards an opponent to send them the “wah,” swipe downwards towards your player to receive it, and swipe left or right to perform the left or right chopping actions. Players animate accordingly in the bird’s eye view of the playing field, but to help out, there is and indicator that designates the person with the “wah.” Your score increases as you survive longer and longer, but be careful because so does the speed of the game. Challenge your friends to see who can survive the longest and get the highest score!
