UMBC Campus Friend
By Greg Fiumara
We all know what it’s like to be the “new kid,” especially at college. Now, with the exciting new application UMBC Friend, you don’t have to worry about feeling out of place, or at least lost, at your new home, UMBC. With your iPhone in hand, UMBC Friend will guide you through the sidewalks of the strange campus and turn you into a master of the terrain in no time.
UMBC Friend has three views to choose from:
- Near Me (requires iPhone)
- Where Is
- My Schedule
In the Near Me view, toggle on Core Location by pressing the upper-right button to allow UMBC Friend to get your current GPS location. If you are near an office that UMBC Friend knows about, it will be displayed in the table. As you continue to walk around campus in the Near Me view, this list will update on the fly. To prevent it from updating, toggle off Core Location access through the button on the top-right. Selecting any office name in the list will provide you with more information about the office.
The Where Is view aggregates all the offices that the UMBC Friend knows about into one table. Scroll through the list to find out where an office you are interested in visiting is located. Click the button in the office information view to get information and a picture of the building in which the office in question is housed.
The My Schedule view is designed at keeping newcomers to the UMBC community on course. Before the start of the semester, insert your course schedule into the UMBC Friend app. On your first day of walking to class, you can pull out your iPhone and visually be able to tell which academic building you need to head to by pressing the blue disclosure triangle next to the course name in the My Schedule view. Your schedule can be modified at any time.
With UMBC Friend, there’s no longer a need to worry about not knowing where you are in a new place. As time passes, you will need to use the application less and less, but don’t forget about the first friend you made on campus, UMBC Friend, who was always there for you
